Values vs Beliefs

 Values vs Beliefs

My spiritual intention this morning was to respect opinions of others even when I do not understand or agree with them.   A friend of mine then asked, “If the other’s opinion is destructive or hurtful to others does that get respect.”  Obviously what I meant to say was “My intention is to respect others even when I do not understand or agree with their opinions.”

Shortly after sharing my spiritual intention for the day I listened to this week’s podcast of On Being – a conversation between host Shankar Vedantam and Adam Grant, Wharton professor and author of the book, Originals:  How Non-Conformists Move the World.  The title of the podcast Is “The Easiest Person to Fool”.   I urge the reader to listen.

One of the distinctions Dr. Grant makes is between beliefs and values.  Of those he says, “…when I think about a belief, I would say that’s something that you take as true. A value is something you think is important.” He goes on to say, “And yeah, I think a lot of us make a mistake of taking our beliefs and opinions and making them our identify.”

I find his use of terms helpful. Generally, when I am talking with myself or others I ask if some opinion is a core value or belief.  Often I find that us humans, as Dr. Grant states, confuse what we belief with who we are. If I believe an opinion is part of my core identity then I am likely to feel offended or hurt if someone disagrees with me. I am also more likely to confuse the identity of the person with whom I am talking  with their opinion.

If we are able to separate our core identity from our opinions then it is easy to treat others as a person who deserves love and respect.   One of my nephews said to me the other day, “ I would like to think that most men are wanting to improve in all aspects of life.” He said this is response to the fact that I disagreed with something which was strongly advocated by a speaker we both heard. I agreed with my nephew.  I had no intention of implying disrespect for the men with whom I disagreed.   One of my core values is that all people deserve love and respect.   I may strongly disagree with their opinions but I do not want to confuse their opinion with who they are as persons.

Dr. Grant shared the fact that the Wright brothers had a very close working and personal relationship but they had passionate disagreements as they were  exploring flying machines and other inventions.  The best leaders often deliberately consult with those with whom they disagree.

Those of us who have a strong and passionate personality might want to be aware that we can often communicate as if we are attacking the personhood of one with whom we are disagreeing.  We may need, at times, to explore ways of communicating which are still clear but are experienced less invasively.   We may also want to be clear about the distinction between our values and our beliefs.  Beliefs are based on what information one has managed to collect thus far. In every area of life new knowledge is constantly coming to the surface.  Our beliefs are constantly changing.

My core values are less dependent on new information.  Yet, I want to continue to explore how I  arrived at that value and if there is any information which might cause me to rethink it.

Almost all of my closest friends have many beliefs which are much different than mine. Most of us, however, have similar core values.  When those core values differ my core value is to treat the other person with love and respect.  Obviously if someone’s core value is that only some people deserve love and respect then I am going to do all I can to ensure the body politic guarantees the same rights to all including that person who thinks the opposite should be the case. We are all aware that in current political and religious clients acting thusly may be a huge challenge.   I  believe that most of us can meet that challenge.

An exercise in h0nesty

An exercise in honesty

I began this blog/journal entry with the goal of exploring “manning up”.  What I needed, as is frequently the case, was to exercise honestly with myself.

This morning my spiritual intention was “Be open to learning no matter what the source.”  I knew I was attending a men’s breakfast at a church with my nephew.   Thoughts as I joined  him and others were:

  • I love spending time with my nephew and am honored that he wants to spend time with me
  • I believe all the men who attend these breakfast events are sincerely looking for something.
  • I have a habit of listening for areas of disagreements rather than agreements; for differences rather than similarities especially in religious setting which I perceive as requiring a limited view of God and of our role as humans.
  • I have a long history of hearing what I need to hear to grow emotionally and spiritually from sources I was prepared  (consciously or unconsciously) to discount.
  • There is no place in this church for a gay man.
  • There is no place in this church for a man who believes the Christian concept of God and understanding of Jesus is just one of many possible frameworks for a god who is expansive enough to contain all human attempts to conceptualize a framework.
  • I am thrilled that the leaders of this church are tackling such often-ignored subjects as porn and other addictions.
  • I think we should all “people” our posts.  If in a marriage/committed relationship we should do this together not with one person being a leader and the other a follower.
  • Obviously there are situation in which one person will need to take the leadership but this should not be based on gender.

Some of what I heard this morning was:

  • We all have valuable skills and talents.
  • We all do better when we have each other’s backs.
  • We are community. All we do should honor that community.
  • We all sense that there is more to success than making money or having possessions.  Success is a spiritual prac tice.
  • I have more in common with this group of men than I have differences.

When I practice this exercise in honestly I remain teachable. When I do not,  I disconnect from myself, others and the god of my understanding. When I am teachable, I, as Father Greg Boyle would say, return myself to myself.  When I return myself to myself I reconnect with the god of my understanding and, thus, with others and mother earth

Mercy

Mercy

A friend messages me this morning and said that in her bible study they were exploring the concept of mercy.  I messaged back, “I suspect that the God of my understanding is not surprised that we are human.”
I cannot imagine that there is a person reading this blog who has not had multiple “human” moments in their life journey; moments during which they did something hurtful or potentially hurtful to others.  How many times has one been angry enough to throw something which could have hit someone at just the right angle at the right speed and permanently injured or killed them.  How many times has one been driving and momentarily got distracted nearly causing a wreck or hitting a pedestrian?  How many times has one cheated- just a little,  discovered one did not pay for something at the store, misrepresented some expense on one’s tax report, wished someone harm, been a self-centered  person ignoring the needs of others, “borrowed” something that did not belong to one, lied to convince someone to have sex, or done a myriad of other action which could easily have crossed a legal line and given the right set of circumstances - ones race or economic status - risked being charged with a crime?

Which one of the readers of his blog deliberately ordered an illness which affects the ability to experience a shared reality?   Which one of can claim to be morally superior to those in prison?  Which one of us has allowed a craving for power, the “need” to be right, the fear of rejection, poverty or some other condition to guide some of our decisions?

We have a multitude of words in our language to separate the “good” people from the “bad” people; to identify the “criminals” from the non-criminals. Many of us resent those who need a hand up and label them as those wanting a hand out.  Many of us hold tight to the illusion that we have a “free will”; that we can treat our body with disrespect in terms of exercise, nutrition, and emotional factors and still expect to have a shared reality grounded in one’s core values.

If one is going to posit a god of one’s understanding why would one posit a god who was shocked that we are imperfect humans; that we have not only have some programmed parts but parts which may or may not work well on any given day or in any given moment?  If the god of one’s understanding already knows that we are human, he/she/it is not going to be surprised that we engage in behavior which is illogical?

The god of my understanding is well aware that we are human;  is well aware that the function of our brain is less than perfect. If this is true what does the concept of mercy mean?  The accepted general definition of mercy seems to be forgiveness for one’s sin. If this is accurate than it makes no sense to say we need mercy or forgiveness.  My spiritual goal is to do what I can to do my small part to function as a part of the whole - to cause no harm but to add to the effective functioning of the whole.  Yet, being the human that I am I often fall short.  Not only do factors out of my control affect how my brain functions, but I make decision to eat unearthly foods, to not get enough rest or otherwise ensure that my brain will not function at an optimal level.

Do I need  forgiveness for being human or do I need the self-confidence/the sense of self-worth to accept what was neglectful, hurtful, less than my best?   My Buddhist teacher would suggest that I merely notice the outcome of my behavior; to not label it as good or bad but to notice whether it achieved my desired moral or spiritual goal.

Sin

Sin

In a previous blog I invited the reader to consider a more mature concept of what some call the “I am”  and some call the whole working as one unit.  I further suggested that we need to be concerned with actions or behavior which adversely affects the working of the whole – destroys the balance.  Traditionally many culture have suggested that behavior which seemed to upset the balance should be called sin.  Further, in an attempt to force individuals to behave in a way which some claimed benefited the whole, the concept of pleasing a god was introduced.  Just in case one was not moved by the threat of punishment in this life journey the concept of eternity was also introduced.   Thus, if one displeased the god of one’s understanding than one could be thrown into the fires of hell forever.  Under this model immoral and sinful was synonymous.  The theory seem to be that humans needed to be fearful of this punishment to prevent them from engaging in behavior that supposedly offended the god of one’s understanding as interrupted by a human or some group of humans.   The fact that the very behavior which certain humans decided was going to acutely displease the god of one’s understanding if person X engaged in it but not if person Y engaged in it (frequently a person in authority) was often not addressed.    The concept of justice came to be associated with this system and has, to this day, been duplicated in our civil society.  Punishment for what some in the community decides offends the god of one’s understanding is righteously melted out by those in authority.

Often the behavior which is alleged to be offensive to the god of one’s understanding and, thus, to the civil authorities is:

  • Not harmful to the balance of the whole but is harmful to the status quo of the particular segment of a community.
  • Was originally based on an unscientific understanding because of scientific tools than available
  • Benefits some industry such as the private prison system as well as local, state and federal prison system which need a lot of materials and supplies to function.
  • Are accepted or punished depending on the ability to hire high priced, skilled individuals such as attorneys, accountants and others.
  • Is labeled as immoral or unlawful based on the power status of those engaging in a particular behavior.
  • Is labeled as immoral or unlawful depending on who wins control. Thus, killing by someone on behalf of the state is not only moral but perhaps heroic while killing  in other circumstances is immoral or unlawful.  Manipulating the system for millions of dollars might, if one is a war contractor or a supplier for a prison might be moral and lawful while doing  the same for small gain might be immoral and unlawful.
  • Is aligned with one’s prejudices and/or biases such as racism or sexism.

As so-called civilized societies move forward the members of those societies must begin to reexamine the motivations and long-term consequences for labeling and punishing certain behavior as immoral or unlawful.   The same societies must decide if justice is going to continue to be mitigated by prejudice, bias, status, wealth, and unscientific information.  First, of course, one must decide one’s long-term goals.   If there are no long-term goals but merely short-term ones based on who can gather the most wealth, power or other temporary gains then there is no immoral behavior but only what the system will tolerate.  If the goal is to punish any behavior which someone (probably a group of males with power) decided was displeasing to the god of their underfunding and for which there is no scientific evidence that it adversely affects the balance of the whole then the society may want to rethink what is unlawful or immoral.

I am not suggesting that these are simple issues with clear cut answers. I am suggesting that perhaps:

  • Rules or laws should equally apply to all who are mentally healthy enough to be capable of rational thought (as we learn more about the human brain the understanding of “free will” might also change).
  • The “rights” of environmental entities might be as important as those of humans.
  • Behavior which is displeasing to some might not be a sufficient basis to declare it immoral or unlawful.
  • We might be more reluctant to blame the god of one’s understanding for decisions of what is moral or lawful.

Many bowls

I grew up being taught about the god envisioned by the Christian religion.  I was aware some people in our community did not believe in a higher power.  I do not remember any neighbors  who were Jewish, Muslim or belonged to any other religious tradition.  I had some vague idea of the spiritual tradition of Native Americans.   Even though Native Americans were part of our “immediate family” and were a significant part of the community in which I grew up  I have no memory of being taught those spiritual traditions were a  rich part of her heritage or their religion were as valid as  those posited by Christians.

As an adult in the United States Navy,  I still did not learn about other religious or spiritual traditions.  For the most part, I was only privy to the alleged distinctions between various denominations or branches of the Christian religion. All of them, however, posited a concept of the trinity – Christ, the holy spirit and god the father.  It was not until the sixties that I begin to be more aware of various religions and various philosophies.   I was excited to learn when studying or reading philosophy and history of religions of the varieties of gods and religions, which, though the centuries, had attempted to explain the meaning of the life journey of humans and their relationship to the rest of creation.   There were moments when I was rather envious of the Greek gods who seemed to be more fun and more relatable than the rather punishing, self-centered, narcissistic, jealous, fun adverse God about which I was taught in first the Southern Baptist and then the Presbyterian branches of the Christian Church.  Still, I was convinced that the mission of the Christian church was to follow the simple teachings of the Jesus fellow who, like my then understanding of the Buddha, did not get attached to money, power, or titles. His disciples, did, on the other hand, seem quite concerned at times with proclaiming Jesus as the one true path to God. I was convinced that as an ordained minister I could emulate those renegades William Sloane Coffin, Peter Dougherty, the Berrigan brothers, Martin Luther King, Jr;, Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, and others who lived as is they really believed the teaching of Jesus.  The creators of “Godspell”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” and others imbued the example of Jesus with an energy which skirted on the edges of the organized Christian church.  As it turned out my “ministry” was not to be contained or permitted by the Christian religion.  Yet, because  I have been used to thinking within this framework I continue to this day to often envision within the Christian religion a radical people who believe that all are equally deserving of the resources of this planet. I no longer believe in a narrow minded, angry, jealous, self-centered God who is the one true God and only shows up in so the Christian Church.  The god of my understanding shows up in all forms, in all religions and in all places.

In my childlike mind the god of my understanding is an equal opportunity playmate;  contains all that is and whose only requirement is that we humans respect the fact that all is interconnected; that all parts of this magical universe is sacred and has a role to play.  Although I eat plants, eggs, other dairy products and even meat, I believe I must do so with  gratitude and humility.  I respect those who are vegetarian or vegan.

I believe that us humans will continue to ponder our role and purpose in this brief life journey.  We my even posit more frameworks or bowls into which we attempt to fit the gods and their creations.   I suspect that each has a piece of truth but none is large enough to contain the whole of the truth.  I also suspect that we need to quit envisioning gods whose self-esteem is so fragile that worth is dependent on being more than, bigger than or smarter than; so fragile that worth is at the expense of the rights and needs of others.   It may be that Mark Twain’s Letters From the Earth contains more wisdom than any of our individual bowls.
