 Sunday Musings  - July 28, 2024
 
I am fascinated with the attempt of we humans to invent theories of our worth by envisioning gods which elevate us to a position which is superior to all which exist.  Even when the gods we create offer a playful relationship, humans have a special or elevated position.
 
In the United States many of the Europeans brought with them the Christian god who according to their sacred scriptures:
 
“And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” https://www.bible.com

The Jewish sacred text begins the same.  
 
As the United States grew welcoming immigrants and bringing others as slaves or indentured servants many brought other religious beliefs.
 
The Native Americans as well as immigrants from indigenous tribes in various parts of the world often posited God or Gods who had a more synchronistic relationship with humans, Mother Nature and all which exists.   The following poem illustrates that relationship.

Some humans have posited either all is sacred, or nothing is sacred.  Other have suggested that just as “one cannot step into the same river twice” (Heraclitus) the essence of al is more than the individual parts.   When I ask the river the nature of its essence it replies that it is all its parts and more than its parts.  It is not the water, bed, or banks since all of these are constantly changing, constantly in the state of becoming.  Yet there is an essence we name the river.
We humans also have an essence which is more than our individual parts; more than our achievements; more than our physical bodies and more than our thoughts or emotions.  Our actions are affected by and affects all which exists at any one moment, but they alone are not our essence.  Just as with the river we are constantly in the process of becoming.  We have an essence which is more than our individual parts and is not separate from all the rest of the universe.  If we humans bit by bit destroys the earth, we cease to exist.
 Many visions of healing/growing include the concept of connectedness.  It is thought by many that death is both the state of disconnectedness and opening to reconnecting.   Many healers would maintain that to heal - to reclaim one’s essence - one must die unto a reconnection with the universe. It is interesting that in some religions one must be baptized - symbolically cleansed with/rejoined with water.
Paradoxically our attempt to have dominion over all the earth is resulting in our physical, emotional and spiritual death as well as the death of the planet.
 
No one “knows” God.  We humans are not God.  Perhaps there is no God which gives humans dominion over all that is. There may be a God who/which exists as the whole; a God which invites each of us to embrace our essence; an essence which cannot have dominion over other people, the earth, the birds, the cattle, every creeping thing but coexist as part of the whole.

Recently I was in a Christian religions service on a Sunday morning. The church is a mainline Christian church on the edge of the community where I live. It cannot be considered a community church per se although I and a few other people who live in what is considered a poorer and less desirable neighborhoods of my community do attend this church.  I know and deeply care for several of the individuals, couples and families who are members of this church.  It has an outstanding music program which often feeds my soul, I am, however, at times, uncomfortable in this church.  Most recently on July 4th and the Sunday following July 4th I cringed when, once again, the church leaders created a salad of patriotism and Christianity.  Furthermore, the patriotic songs fed the myth that the United States of America is America and not just one of the Americas.
 
 
 
Scholars I have consulted see nothing wrong or inaccurate with referring to the United’s States of America as America. Yet, when I talk to individuals who live or were born in other American countries including Mexico, South America, Central America and the Caribbean Islands they often find the use of the term to refer only to the United States of America, arrogant, oppressive and one more instance of the United States acting as it has the right to abuse the resources, people and their history; acting as if all other countries are the Cinderellas of the United States of America.
 
Clearly there is nothing wrong with having an affection for one’s community or country.  Most people I know from many different countries have great pride in their cultural, academic, emotional, and their spiritual history.   One can be proud without suggesting that their history and culture is superior to any other.   The United States of America has many beautiful places geographically and culturally. It has a tradition of art which feeds the soul on many levels.  It is also, however, a country which is enormously violent, economically unjust and jails more people than any other developed nation.   Its history includes violence towards many in this country as well as against those of other countries.  As a country we promote an economic system which results in a grossly uneven distribution of resources.  Some believe we desperately need, as a country, to work the equivalent of a 12-step program; to practice humility and honor the people of all countries including the many American countries.
 
Does the god of the major religions which operate in the United States really care more about the United States of America then he/she/it does other countries or people.  Is not God the same in all countries?  Is not the same true for those who are worshiping the Muslim God, the God of Abraham, the various Hindi gods or any other god(s)?   Why would one posit a concept of God which favors one nation over another any more than a healthy parent would favor one child over another.  Healthy parents know each child has strengths and limitations; each is perfect in its imperfections.  Did any God originate in the United States of America? Were they birthed by someone in this country?  Perhaps some of the deities of the indigenous people in this country come closest to claiming this birthright.
 
The word church connotes community.  It is not a United Stages community, an Egyptian community, a Russian community or an English community.  It is a community of individuals, couples and families who are attempting to adopt and live a spiritual life; a life with purpose which recognizes all are part of a universal(s) whole.

Clearly all of us need to strive to be loving, generous, responsible citizens of the church community and the geographic community where we worship. All can affirm we thrive together or die together. In church we are seeking a spiritual path as citizens of the universe who may be living and paying taxes in a small section of the universe which is no more and no less important than any other part of the universes(s).
 
Let’s keep the flag of any country out of churches. Let keep patriotic songs out of churches.  Let us embrace the United States of America as one country in the Americas no less or more important or deserving of respect than any other.

The ten commandments
 
Recently the state of Louisiana and now Oklahoma are requiring the Ten Commandments be displayed and/or taught in public schools, not as a part of the history of religion and our historic attempt to articulate ethical guidelines but as if they are the ethical guidelines which we, as a nation, have to live; as if we are a Christian nation and not a rich stew of many views of how we can best take care of each other and the rest of that is.
 
Let’s look at the Ten Commandments:
 
•           Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  The implication is that no other concept of God is valid or moral.   The further implication is that this god is a very jealous teenager who must have all one’s attention.
•           “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.”   This is usually interpreted to mean that anything other than the agreed upon depiction of God will make this god very unhappy.  Some religions forbid any depictions of God.
•           “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.”  This god can be jealous, angry and even destroy humans but one cannot get angry in return? Yet, we humans do get angry at the god of our understanding. He/she/it can seem very cruel at times.
•           “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”   To keep it holy means for some that the entire day should be spent in prayer. Others interrupt it to mean a day of rest and refueling. Clearly rest periods are important for we humans, but when we rest might need to depend on the needs of each other at the moment.
•           “Honor thy father and thy mother.” Does this mean the sperm and egg donor who may be ill equipped to be teachers, guides, providers who can refrain from hurtful, mean behavior?  
•           “Thou shalt not kill.”  The same people who are insisting on obeying the Ten Commandments are frequently the strongest second amendment advocates for the ownership and use of guns to kill others; the first to advocate violence against violence; the first to protect bump stocks, to first to advocate for nuclear weapons; the first to imprison others; the first to defend the use of techniques such as water boarding and other cruel treatment.  Does killing refer to just the physical body or to the emotional body as well?
•           “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”  Many of us would suggest that one honor one’s commitment to one’s partner.  Clearly most of us do not advocate donating sperm or egg to create a child that we are not ready to care for or to give to someone else who can emotionally, physically and economically care for that child. Clearly, we are sexual beings.  We do need some guidelines to prevent unplanned and unwanted pregnancies.  We do need to be mindful of sexually transmitted diseases. To me it does seem important to honor whatever commitments we have made to each other and to ensure all our relationship are respectful and loving.
•           “Thou shalt not steal.”  What is stealing?   Taking and hoarding more than our share of resources? Being paid millions or even billions of dollars while opposing living wages for some in the business or company for which one is CEO or owner(s)? Abusing nature which adversely affects others?  Making and marketing goods which one knows are not healthy, affordable, or good for the environment?  Does seduction equal stealing; violence, prison, mistreatment of the homeless?   What exactly is stealing?
Obviously, the intended imposition of the Ten Commandments on students in public school is one more attempt to control and oppress; to attempt to force developing minds into a small box.   ‘
Perhaps honestly needs to be at the top of the list of commandments we teach our children.  If the intent of placing the Ten Commandments in classrooms alongside of other suggested moral or ethical guidelines is to stimulate a discussion of how we can best care for each other and the universe(s) I would certainly support such a suggestion.  The intent, however, is to impose, without critical discussion, the imposition of moral/ethical rules which seem to be more about control and blind obedience of some over others and not about enhancing our understanding of what it might mean to attempt to create a community of the people, by the people and for the people; a community which honors the words:  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”  We currently understand that “all” means all men, women and children.  If our intent is to create a community which honors all religions; all attempts to articulate moral rules/behavior to serve all people and the rest of the universe (s) then one might present the Ten Commandments as just one such attempt.
Some of us are deeply suspicious of anyone one who claims to have access to the truth; the truth of best guidelines to serve not only we humans but the planet, the universe(s) and all contained therein.
Men and women wiser than me have suggested that wisdom begins with an open mind - with humility.  The imposition of the Ten Commandments as the only acceptable ethical/moral guidelines does not, in my opinion, demonstrate the humility necessary to stimulate a learning environment conducive to an exploration of a healthier
 
universe(s).

God is????
 
Religions can loosely be described as an attempt by we humans to make sense out of what seems to be a brief life journey often accompanied by every form of pain.  On the surface this journey makes no sense beyond being born, living, and dying.  Most of we humans don’t live longer than a century. Many do not live that long.  A few live longer.
 
As far as can be determined we humans are the only life form which grapples with the question of purpose.  Other animals seem to be content being born, propagating, raising their young (often for a short period of time) and dying.  Plants may bring beauty, an ecological balance, provide food/substance, or, at times, especially if removed from their “natural habitat”, create disharmony.  As far as we can tell neither plants nor other non-human life forms worry about the past or the future, how long they will live, how they compare to other parts of creations or create a system for exploring metaphysical or epistemological questions.  I have spent hours listening for a rose or other flower to complain about its appearance, comparing itself to another flower, agonizing over the length of its life or questioning its spiritual purpose.
 
We humans compare ourselves to other humans, argue about truth, and the meaning of this life journey.  We compete for power, prestige, the accumulation of knowledge, objects, sexual conquests, or other “proof” of our relative worth.
We posit the existence of god or gods who in the mind of the human creator demands allegiance and a belief that they are the one true divine being(s). 
 
If one googles the number of religions since recorded history began, one finds estimates of between 4000 and 10000.  Some are very similar, but most, if not all, assume their god are the one true one(s). The fact that there have been many concepts of God prior to the creation of their God seldom deters one from faith in their god.  A few religions leave room for a plurality of Gods or no God or Gods. One of these religions embracing people of various or no belief in a god are the Unitarian Universalists.   The Hindu religion embraces multiple gods.   Some Hindu scholars suggest 4 main gods while other suggest 10.  The ancients Greeks had a plurality of gods. Many so-called primitive tribes had various concept of gods.
 
In the United States there is a strong history of Christianity as well as other religions.  In spite of the National legal separation of church and state, there remains a  committed group of individuals and groups who are insistent on identifying the United States as a Christian nation. They are committed to imposing their beliefs on all citizens.  This was the intent of the enactment of the recent law in Louisiana requiring the posting of The Ten Commandments in every school classroom in that state.  The anti-abortion movement, the anti LGBT movement and ironically the gun ownership/second amendment lobby is often fueled by self-identified Christians.  The most political conservatives of these are loosely identified as the Christian Nationalists.  Currently, there is a conservation majority in the United States House of Representatives and the Supreme Court of the United States who are determined to push what they posit as Christian values to guide legislative decisions and the law of the land.  The fact that their personal behavior often strongly conflicts with what many consider the teachings of Jesus seems to pose no cognitive dissonance for them. 
 
According to “populationeducation.org” there are currently around 10,00 distinct religions in the world. Over three-quarters of the global population adheres to one of these four -Christianity (31%), Islam (24%), Hinduism (15%) and Buddhism (7%).”  A slightly smaller, but powerful group, are Jewish (possibly as many as 6.2%). Atheists may comprise 7% of the world’s population.   The figures vary according to sources. but the rough estimate is nearly the same by all who attempt to measure such groups.
 
The late Colton Pearson whose life is depicted in the popular movie “Come Sunday” was a very conservative, mega church pastor until he decided that the God he had been preaching was either a monster or not the one true god.  He came to believe that only a monster could withhold knowledge of itself and then punish billions of individuals for not worshiping he/she/it.  Colton was evicted from the mega church he pastored and the religious association to which he belonged.  He then aligned himself with the Unitarian Universalists in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
 
The questions remain.  Is there a god or gods?  What is the nature or God(s)?  Do we humans have a purpose which is essentially different than other parts of nature? Are we part of a magical interconnected whole.  Must we do our part for the whole to work? What if we could do our best to honor all parts of the whole, including our fellow human(s), the animals, pants, insects, minerals, water, air and all that is?  Do we need to argue about the nature of that whole or assign human qualities of greed, jealousy, anger or other symptoms of an immature teenagers to our concept of that whole?  Have there been and are there many wise teachers including some humans such as The Buddha, Mohamed, and Jesus?  Do we need to make gods of them and wrap them in exclusionary rules?  Is it enough to know that we thrive together or perish together?
