On People’s Pharmacy May 2, Dr. Tieraona Low Dog talks with hosts Terry and Joe Graedon about the health benefits of chocolate and caffeine. “The European Food Safely Authority , the EU’s equivalent of the FDA for food, have determined that the flavanol compounds found in dark chocolate are beneficial for circulation. They keep blood platelets from to sticking together to form clots, and they help to control blood pressure as well as maintain flood flow.” Coffee and tea can be a rich source of antioxidants. The hosts and Dr. Low Dog are quick to remind listeners that there is a significant difference in how people metabolize coffee. There are those who cannot tolerate any caffeine while others such as my grandma Fannie drank coffee all day long with seemingly no adverse effects. Ion the other hand those I know who live with atrial fibrillation (AFib) may not tolerate any caffeine.
They are not suggesting that eating a candy bar or drinking an energy drink is food for one’s health. One, of course, has to take into account all the ingredients in any product one consumes and, as noted, one always has to listen to one’s body.
Our human bodies have much better communication skills than Alexa. It will always let us know when the “engine” is not running smoothly – in synch. It may not communicate the precise diagnosis. Even symptoms which health care professionals suggest are psychosomatic are an accurate signal that something is off. What is off may not originate in a particular organ. It may start with a thought or a feeling. Those too are part of the physical body. It is up to the individual and often the health care provider to determine the etiology of the symptom. Telling someone “it is all in your head” is not helpful, The issue might start with a thought or an abusive message one has repeated received from others but even that is a physical process.
Our ancestors have been experimenting since the beginning to determine what is good for the body as well as individual differences in what our bodies will tolerate. We may now have a more sophisticated knowledge of the human body but we often seem to have less appreciation for the perfection of the system and how well it communicates; letting us know what is good for it.
We have many food products which contain many different ingredients. Often it may not be immediately evident what ingredients is harming us. It is good to know, however, that chocolate and caffeine can, for many of us, be an essential part of our diet. Moderation and listening to our body is of paramount importance.
It is not to too late to order even a small box of quality chocolate, tea or coffee for the special woman in your life who you want to honor on mother’s day . Make sure you know what she likes and what her body can tolerate. If finely roasted coffee, tea or rich dark chocolates are among the special treats she appreciates then by all means order some today. Remember it is not quantity but quality which she will appreciate. If the budget is limited an IOU or a handmade coupon to be redeemed at a later date will be appreciated.
