I am humbled by the concern.
Are you safe in that neighborhood
on the edge where the hurt, anger and
violence is perhaps more naked
than in nice neighborhoods with
manicured lawns and often enough distance
to hide the hurt, the violence, the addiction,
and the threat of arrogance armed with the
latest weapons?
Are you safe in the neighborhood where
churches create both the light and the shadows?
Are you safe where the anger and the love
demands to be seen?
Don’t you yearn for the quiet of the more refined?
The quiet which masks the arrogance which
graciously lets you know that God loves you in spite of
of your misguided, left leaning, tree hugging, non-violence!
“In spite of” never feels quite safe to me.
Am I safe?
Yes, I respond, I am safe to love.
I believe we will not heal if we refuse to see the pain
as well as the joy, hope and faith which will shout
from the churches today.
Thanks for your concern.
