A friend shared with me this morning that his 3-year-old asked, “How do reindeer fly?” He replied, “Christmas magic.” Indeed, that is the perfect answer for a young child and perhaps for all of us. When I received his text, I was listening to a rebroadcast of a 2012 conversation between On Being host, Krista Tippett and Father Greg Boyle author of Tattoos on the Heart and Barking to the Choir. Both books arise out of his work with gang members in Los Angeles. He is also head of Homeboy Industries which employs former gang members in a variety of business enterprises.e also He. When I read the text from my friend I thought, “Ahh Christmas Magic. Father Boyle has long been one of my mentors although I have never personally met him. I have visited the store and restaurant at Homeboy/Homegirl Industries.
Many friends of mine who may or may not use or relate to a Christian framework celebrate Christmas as a time to renew their relationship with magic. Of course, for many this is easiest when there are young children. Young children and those who have chosen to reclaim the mind and heart of a young child experience life as magical.
Of course, reindeer fly so they can bring gifts of fairy dust and Peter Pan to all who are willing to welcome them.
I may not see reindeer flying on Christmas Eve but just today I saw the magic of a young child who finds delight in light, sound, taste and touch. I may not see reindeer flying but I will bear witness to the winter freeze shelter for the homeless; the magic of many volunteering food, time and clothing. I may not see reindeer flying but I will see some local restaurants such as Rachels on 16th open on Christmas Eve to hand out food to those who are hungry. I may not see reindeer flying on Christmas Eve but I will see Bethlehem Apolostolic Temple handing out food baskets made possible by many in this small community. I may not see reindeer flying but I will hear the magic of the Nutcracker ballet music.
Yes, Susie, Sam, Andy, Johnny, Rachel, Jeramie, Pat, Marv, Kurt and many others you are the magic. You are the fairy dust. You are the Peter Pans. You are the reindeer which fly on Christmas Eve.
How do reindeer fly? Magic on Christmas Eve and all year long. we only have to believe.
