Spring and fall are my two favorite times of the year. I am eager to hear what the first grade scholars are noticing or learning about spring.
They are arriving now.
Me: Good morning class. Yes, we have cookies.
Class: Good morning Mr. Jim
Me; Ahmes please pass out the cookies.
(She quickly does and even more quickly the cookies are consumed.
Me: Your assignment was to talk with your family about what you like and notice about spring. Who wants to share?
Tommy: We have a lot of birds. One of them built a nest in a tree by the house and I can look down on it from my bedroom. There are three eggs. The babies will come out of the egg. I came out of my mother’s tummy and not out of an egg. I asked my mother how I got into her tummy.
Me: That is great Tommy. Spring is often the time when birds lay eggs from which will come a baby bird. What did your mom say about how you got into her tummy?
Tommy: She says that once a month until they are older a woman makes eggs. The dad has to deliver a part of himself to the egg like the pizza delivery person and if that part and the egg like each other they create a baby.
Me: Excellent Tommy. Who noticed something else about spring?
Sue: Last fall I helped dad plant these funny brown things and a few days ago this green thing came out of the ground. Dad said that the green thing came out of the brown thing. Then the green thing kept growing and then it made a flower. I asked dad how it knew how to do that. I cannot do that. Dad said it was magic.
Me: It is magic isn’t it that the brown thing – called a bulb – knows how to make the flower.
Steve: We went out for a walk in the woods by our house and we saw baby rabbits and deer and all kinds of bugs and spiders. Everything is having babies. I am glad that I am not having a baby.
Me: Yes you young scholars have a lot to learn before you are ready to have a baby.
Sofia: Mom took us outside and said that we could look for different shades of green. She brought paper and the water color paints so we could try to paint all the greens.
Me: Wow! How many shades of green did you see Sofia?
Sofia: Too many and they kept changing. Mom said that was because the light kept changing.
Me: Did you notice anything else Sofia?
Sofia: When I went out the next day some of the baby leaves were bigger. Then the rose bushes were getting leaves too. There was a lot of notice Mr. Jim. Mom put my paintings on the refrigerator.
Ahmes: All the people in our block decided that we would pick up all the trash which had been hiding under the snow. There was a lot but everything looked nice when we were finished and you could see the grass which grew and grew and grew.
Me: What does spring smell like?
Ahmes: When Mr. Smith cut the grass we could smell it. I don’t know to describe it. Mr. Smith just called it the smell of new cut grass.
Me: Yes, I do not know how else to describe the smell either. Fresh is one word I use. Can anyone think of any other words to describe spring?
Sam: It is bright Uncle Jim.
Tommy: New. It smells new Mr. Jim.
Tara: Dancing. Everything is dancing Mr. Jim.
Me: Those are all great descriptions. Do you remember the fall?
Class: Yes.
Tommy: Everything was brown and dying.
Me: Then what happens in the spring?
Tara: Everything is new again.
Me; Have all of you noticed that sometimes when it seems as if life is very sad and difficult then something good happens?
Sofia: The other day dad burnt dinner and we had to order pizza. We never get to order pizza. We were glad that dinner got burnt.
Me: That is a great example.
Sam: When I was sick I got all kinds of presents! . I hated being sick but I liked the presents.
Me: Very good Sam. So sometimes life is like the seasons. Sometimes we have fall but then spring always comes.
Sue: Like when it is time for cookies Mr. Jim?
(I smile.)
Me: Yes Sue it is time for cookies. Pass them out please.
(Sue puts them on the table on her wheelchair and quickly rolls around to everyone handing out cookies.)
Me: Thanks Sue. How about for next week you and your families talk about why we have parties. Some of you will have cousins or siblings who are having graduation parties or birthday parties. Why do we have celebrations? Tara will you pass out the assignment please.
Once again you all did an outstanding job. Thank you. Have a wonderful week.
Ring! Ring! Ring!
Class: Bye Mr. Jim
